suzy holds the device up to the sky, watching the sunlight glint off of its crude metal surface. wires run from the end of the box into the ground and underneath, the result of a day’s work. turning her gaze slowly away from her creation to the camp of three tributes just a couple hundred feet off, she takes a deep breath; it’s all or nothing now, but what does she have to lose anyway? raising her hand to the knob on the side of the device, she turns it, never breaking her gaze. for a moment, everything is silent and suzy tenses, body poised to run. then the explosion goes off, lighting up the clearing and blowing the camp, tributes and all, sky high. the others will be here soon. suzy drops the box, stands, and doesn’t look back. technology saves lives, and it destroys them—she doesn’t want to see the aftermath.
